A LOT TO SAY PODCAST

Ep 20: COLLECT-COLLECT with SANDREW

Episode Summary

Joining me for the first live recorded chat of the podcast are renowned street art collectors Sandra Powell and Andrew King, collectively known as SANDREW. In this live in-person chit-chat, we had a conversation in their incredible home which showcases one of the largest street art collections in the world (probably the largest...)

Episode Notes

SANDREW are well known in the street art scene in Melbourne (and beyond) for their voracious collecting of works by some of the world's best street artists. They've championed the street art scene loudly and have supported many artists over the years to help expose them to larger audiences/ ways to create a sustainable living as artists.

We talk about what they are most passionate about, what drives their (usually competitive) collecting behaviour, their love of community engagement and the anti-establishment motives in artists that they adore, as they speak glowingly about the counter-culture they have immersed themselves in over the last decade or so.

(And we do this chat live in their home- which contains once of the most stunning collections of street art in existence!)

A few points in the chit-chat:

  1. Life in the Sunny Side of Melbourne (St Kilda) as opposed to the Dark Side (Where artists live- Collingwood)
  2. The beginnings of the family home
  3. Accumulating an extensive art collection
  4. A penchant for the misfits and the rebellion
  5. Being mistaken for undercover cops
  6. Keeping the company of artists with an emphasis on community engagement
  7. Street Art embedded in Melbourne’s DNA
  8. The circle of collecting behaviour
  9. When SANDREW took 13 artists to San Francisco
  10. What would be the piece they would take with them if the house was on fire?
  11. The tenets- Collecting, Connection & Consulting
