Joining the chit-chat is Oscar McMahon, co-founder of Young Henrys, a much loved independent brewery based out of Newtown, Sydney, which exists to 'Serve the People.' Having spent a large part of his youth playing music with the band Hell City Glamours, Oscar and co-founder Richard Adamson established Young Henrys as a way to bring good craft beer to the people, and as we discuss, it's become a fervent supporter of the creative industries, food and hospitality scene and even community focussed science experiments (!)
Oscar McMahon has been a touring musician, slung beers in bars, and even been categorised as a model for a fleeting moment. He is a business owner of The Unicorn Hotel in Paddington, Sydney and of course, is more commonly known as a co-founder of much-loved, independent, Newtown Sydney based brewery: Young Henrys.
Like most good stories, Young Henrys one started over a beer. Meeting on opposite sides of the bar, Richard Adamson and Oscar McMahon got talking over their love of beer and music, and discovered they also shared the view that the Australian beer scene felt a little stagnant – that it should be more adventurous, innovative and fun. With Richard’s experience in brewing, and Oscar’s hospitality know-how, they decided they should do more than just talk.
Overcoming a tangle of red tape, Young Henrys eventually found a home in a modest warehouse in the backstreets of Newtown. With a few friends, a small brew kit and the maxim to ‘serve the people’, the first Young Henrys beers were brewed in March 2012.
